Over the years, biomedical research has trended toward larger and larger experiments with vast numbers of biological samples collected from consortia of globally dispersed researchers. These big research programs produce terabyte datasets. deCODE has m any years of experience managing the secured IT systems required to safely house and protect your sensitive research information.

The deCODE IT network is comprised of 450 servers (of which over 250 are in a single computational cluster with load-balancing) and 500 workstations, with a total database and file space of 68TB on two enterprise level IBM SAN storage systems. This is backed up by two tape libraries, one on-site and one off-site. Microsoft Windows, Linux and Oracle are the de facto company OS and database standards. Outside connectivity is provided by dual 100mb ethernet connections to two separate ISPs using BGP routing with our own AS number.

Comprehensive security measures are employed across the network and include multiple DMZs, Cisco PIX Firewalls, Cisco routers with access-lists, appliance-based Intrusion Detection/Prevention system, and multiple, cross-vendor, layered antivirus filtering systems. All business-critical network equipment is fault tolerant. All server and network equipment is housed in a secured data center with electronic access control, recorded video surveillance and after-hours guard patrol. The equipment and data center have 3 levels of power supply: datacenter wide UPS; UPS for company facilities; and a diesel backup generator for company facilities.  The IT infrastructure has gone through audit several times in relation to SOX compliance.

The company has extensive expertise in large scale database software projects and has developed systems for all aspects of population based and large-scale genetics. These include LIMS sample and workflow systems with integration with automatic robotic system handling with capacity for some two million samples; genotyping signal processing algorithms; web-based electronic data capture (EDC) systems; identity protection system (IPS) for patient anonymization; highly advanced ad-hoc query and reporting tools based on a proprietary set definition language (SDL); as well as highly sophisticated statistical analysis packages for genetics. deCODE has always had very rigorous development life-cycle procedures and has developed its LIMS software with electronic signature-based audit trails to meet the most stringent requirements from FDA and CLIA, for clinical trial work and diagnostic testing, respectively.
